North Sikkim: A Slow 6-Day Itinerary

Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar and Yumthang — without the 4 AM dashes and packed jeep days. Built around two-night stays so the altitude doesn't catch you, and Yumthang is a half-day, not a forced march.

01

Why Slow It Down

The standard North Sikkim package is 3 days from Gangtok — leave at 8 AM, arrive Lachen at 4 PM, sleep at 9, wake at 4 AM for Gurudongmar, drive to Lachung the same day, wake again at 5 AM for Yumthang. People come back exhausted and altitude-sick.

This guide does it in 6 days with two-night stays in Lachen and Lachung. You drive on alternate days, rest on the others, and the altitude has time to settle. Gurudongmar is optional — only do it if you've spent at least one full day at Lachen first.

Permits & The Agent Rule

North Sikkim is a restricted zone. You cannot self-drive, you cannot book your own car, and you cannot enter without a permit and a registered Sikkim Tourism agent. This sounds annoying — it's actually a relief, because the agent handles permits, vehicles, hotels and meals as one package.

Indian nationals — Inner Line Permit (ILP)

Free. Issued at the Tourism office in Gangtok or by your agent. You'll need: 2 passport photos, a photo ID copy (Aadhaar / driver's licence / voter ID), and a printout of your hotel + vehicle confirmation. Processing takes 4–6 hours; agents do it in parallel with your Gangtok arrival day.

Foreign nationals — Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

Required, and stricter. You must travel in a group of at least two foreigners (some agents bundle solos with other travellers). Foreigners are not allowed at Gurudongmar Lake — only Indian passport holders. You can still visit Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang and Zero Point. RAP processing takes 2 working days; bring your passport + visa copy + 2 photos.

Pick a registered agent first, hotels second. The good Lachen/Lachung hotels are usually held in inventory by the bigger Gangtok agents. Booking the hotel directly often means you can't actually get there because no agent has a vehicle slot for that date. Reverse the usual order.

Getting There

Three legs: outside India to Bagdogra, Bagdogra to Gangtok, Gangtok to Lachen. Each leg is a half-day. The relaxed plan adds a buffer night in Gangtok so you don't fly in and immediately drive 6 hours.

LegTimeIndicative cost
Flight to Bagdogra (Delhi/Mumbai/Bengaluru)2–3 hrs₹4,500–₹9,000 / pax
Train Howrah → NJP (Darjeeling Mail)10 hrs₹1,200–₹3,000
Bagdogra/NJP → Gangtok (cab)4 hrs₹3,500–₹4,500
Gangtok → Lachen (registered jeep, agent)6–7 hrsincluded in package
Lachen → Lachung (registered jeep, agent)4 hrsincluded in package
Lachung → Gangtok (registered jeep, agent)5–6 hrsincluded in package

North Sikkim packages from Gangtok agents typically run ₹14,000–₹22,000 per pax (2-person basis), all-inclusive of jeep, permits, hotel and meals.

Where to Stay — The Best Hotels

Eight properties across Lachen and Lachung. Be honest with yourself: there are no luxury hotels in North Sikkim. The "premium" tier here means heated rooms, hot water on tap, and a real restaurant. Most stays are package-included; ask your agent which of these they use before you book direct.

The Hidden Forest Retreat, Lachung
PremiumLachung · ~₹5,500/night

The Hidden Forest Retreat

The most comfortable bed in North Sikkim. Family-run, set into a pine slope above Lachung river, with proper insulated cottages, in-room heaters, and a kitchen that does Sikkimese, Tibetan and continental. The verandah faces the Lachung Chu — fall asleep to glacial water.

The Apple Orchard Resort, Lachen
PremiumLachen · ~₹4,500/night

The Apple Orchard Resort

The reliable premium pick in Lachen, set in a working apple orchard a short walk from the village monastery. Insulated rooms with mountain-facing windows, a dining hall that serves the warmest dal-bhat-momos circuit you'll ever eat at 9,000 ft, and proper electric heating that actually works through the night.

Le Coxy Resort, Lachung
PremiumLachung · ~₹4,500/night

Le Coxy Resort

An old favourite of the Gangtok agent circuit, on a wide plot above the Yumthang road. Cottages spaced apart, garden seating between them, and a restaurant that's a touch better than the rest. Get a cottage on the upper terrace — the views are worth the extra walk in cold mornings.

Hotel Palm View Lachung
Mid-rangeLachung · ~₹3,200/night

Hotel Palm View

The honest middle option in Lachung. Clean rooms, decent heaters, hot water in the morning if you ask the night before. Rooftop has a clean line of sight to the Lachung monastery and the surrounding peaks. Most agents use this when premium is fully booked.

Hotel Royal Lachen
Mid-rangeLachen · ~₹3,000/night

Hotel Royal Lachen

A long-running mid-tier hotel right in Lachen village — useful when Apple Orchard is full. Wood-panelled rooms, simple but warm, and the staff have run Gurudongmar logistics for fifteen years. Ask them to wake you with hot water and ginger tea — they'll do it without fuss.

Apple Valley Resort, Lachung
Mid-rangeLachung · ~₹2,800/night

Apple Valley Resort

A cluster of cottages in an actual apple valley — apple blossom in April, fruit on the trees in September. Heating is space-heater-only (lower power than central), but the rooms are larger than most in Lachung and the valley setting is the prettiest in this price bracket.

Modern Residency Lachung
Budget+Lachung · ~₹2,200/night

Modern Residency

The reliable budget pick in Lachung. Don't expect insulation or a heater more powerful than a hairdryer — bring a thermal layer for sleeping. But the rooms are clean, the bedding is heavy, and the tariff includes both dinner and breakfast.

Lachen Cottage
BudgetLachen · ~₹1,800/night

Lachen Cottage

A guesthouse run by a local Bhutia family on the back lane of Lachen village. Three rooms only, shared dining table, and a tin-roof verandah with a heart-stopping view of the river gorge. If you want the village experience and not a hotel one, this is it. Book by phone via your agent.

The 6-Day Slow Itinerary

Drive on alternate days. Acclimatise on the others. Optional Gurudongmar dawn run only if the previous day went well. No 4 AM Yumthang dash — go after breakfast.

Day 01

Bagdogra → Gangtok

Land at Bagdogra by noon, agent's cab waiting. Four-hour drive up to Gangtok via Sevoke and Rangpo. Check in at any decent Gangtok property (the Mayfair, Denzong Regency, or a mid-range MG Marg hotel). Evening on MG Marg — pedestrian-only, easy walking, dinner at Taste of Tibet. Submit ILP/RAP papers to your agent tonight; they'll process tomorrow.

Day 02

Gangtok → Lachen

Six to seven hours in the jeep, with breakfast en route at Mangan and lunch at Chungthang. The road follows the Teesta the whole way — keep an eye out for the confluence of the Lachen Chu and Lachung Chu just before Chungthang. Arrive Lachen by 4 PM. Settle in, drink hot ginger-honey tea, do not exert yourself. Early dinner, early sleep.

Day 03

Lachen — Rest day, optional Gurudongmar

This is the day that breaks from every package. Two options:

(a) Rest fully: Sleep in. Walk to Lachen monastery (15-min uphill, slow pace). Long lunch. Read on the verandah. Skip Gurudongmar entirely.

(b) Gurudongmar at dawn: Only if you slept well at Lachen and have no headache. 4 AM departure, 3-hr drive to 17,800 ft. Spend 30 minutes at the lake — no more, the altitude is real. Back at the hotel by 11 AM, then full afternoon to recover. Foreigners cannot do this leg — do (a) instead.

Day 04

Lachen → Lachung

Late breakfast, leave by 10 AM. Four-hour drive south via Chungthang, descending 1,000 ft into the Lachung valley. Lunch at Chungthang. Arrive Lachung by 2:30 PM. Afternoon free — walk to the Lachung monastery (the carved wooden interior is genuinely impressive), or just nap. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 05

Lachung — Half-day Yumthang Valley

Leave at 8 AM (not 5 AM, like the packages). 1.5-hour drive up to Yumthang Valley (the "Valley of Flowers" — best in late April through May for primulas and rhododendrons). Walk the meadow for 90 minutes. Continue to Yumesamdong / Zero Point (15,300 ft) only if weather and energy permit — the landscape is bare moonscape, beautiful but brutal in cold. Back at the hotel by 1:30 PM, full relaxed afternoon, hot bath, fireplace.

Day 06

Lachung → Gangtok → Bagdogra

Long day, but mostly sitting. Five hours Lachung to Gangtok via Mangan. Lunch at Singtam. Continue another four hours to Bagdogra for an evening flight (book for 7 PM or later — the Sikkim road can be unpredictable). Or split this into two: spend a final night in Gangtok and fly out next morning.

06

Cost Breakdown (2 people, 6 days)

North Sikkim costs are dominated by the agent package — vehicle + permits + meals + Lachen/Lachung hotels are bundled. Gangtok nights are usually separate.

When to Go & the Altitude Question

WindowConditionsVerdict
Apr–JunRhododendrons in bloom, primulas in Yumthang. 5–18°C in valleys, sub-zero at Gurudongmar.Best for flowers
Jul–AugHeavy monsoon, frequent road closures, landslides on the Lachen road.Avoid
Sep–OctSkies clear, the cleanest mountain views of the year. Cold but manageable.Best for views
Nov–MarHeavy snow, Gurudongmar and Zero Point routinely closed. Magical when open, but you may not get up.Roll the dice

Altitude is real. Lachen is 9,000 ft, Lachung 8,800 ft, Yumthang 11,800 ft, Gurudongmar 17,800 ft, Zero Point 15,300 ft. AMS (acute mountain sickness) at any of these is unpredictable — fitness doesn't protect you. Symptoms: bad headache, nausea, dizziness. The cure is descent. Talk to your doctor about Diamox before the trip; many travellers take 250 mg the night before Gurudongmar. If you feel unwell at altitude, turn back. Always.
